The 23rd Liffe awards ceremony

17. 11. 2012

Linhart Hal

Yesterday, on 17 November, the Ljubljana Film Festival concluded with a bang. As the 23-year-old tradition dictates, a film screening followed the awards ceremony. The MP3 Percussion Trio opened the ceremony with a composition entitled Stubernic by Mark Ford, after which the versatile Slovenian actor Brane Završan entered the stage. He thanked the cinema-goers for having contributed to the festival’ success and proceeded to address the filmmakers whose films were outstanding enough to merit the film festival’s annual awards. Završan concluded by saying that many more films are being screened today. “If you organise yourself well, you can see five films tomorrow.” Thereupon ensued a screening of a heartrending American film, Beasts of the Southern Wild. Little Hushpuppy lives in dire straits with her daddy in an archaic southern Delta community, called The Bathtub, which they refuse to leave despite great danger of the rising tides.

The screening was followed by an after-party at the CD Club. Many a faithful film lover gathered and socialised with good food, drinks as well as funk and disco rhythms played by DJ Manoo. We spotted Mitja Rotovnik, Director General of Cankarjev dom, teacher of German Natalija Pihler, Miša Molk, Simon Popek as well as founder and former director of Liffe, Jelka Stergel. Present were also many filmmakers and film professionals; we thus caught sight of director of Cannibal Vegetarian, Branko Schmidt and the film’s outstanding lead actor, René Bitorajac, Milagros Mumenthaler, the director of Back to Stay – you can still see it tomorrow at 7pm at Kino Šiška and chat with the director after the screening. After the screening of L there will also be a talk with its director, Babis Makridis. More>
