Big River Man
The Slovenian audiences were eagerly awaiting the premiere of the film about the last swimming feat by our national hero Martin Strel, which was testified also by the crowded Linhart Hall. A humorous documentary treating the 66-day conquest of the Amazon River made a film star out of Martin Strel.
The story about the exploit which well-nigh ended fatally and aroused disapproval and incredulity in many people, ends victoriously: after Danube, Mississippi and the Yangtze River Strel managed to swim the Amazon River, the longest and the most dangerous of them all. After the screening the world ultra marathon swimming record holder, a madman for some and a hero for others, received standing ovations.
His Big River Man aims at bringing attention to the issue of the disappearing Rain Forest and the necessity of human contact with nature. Thus, in October 2008 an International Organisation for the Protection of Rain Forest was established, receiving financial support form numerous countries worldwide.
Martin Strel pointed out that he is but a simple man, yet he firmly believes in his ideas and his mission, therefore he was able to succeed each time. Decisiveness and courage make a hero out of a common person.
